1199 SEIU has organized a massive rally this Saturday outside the Kingsbridge Heights Rehabilitation Care Center, where workers have been striking around the clock for more than two months.
According to the union, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, Congressman Anthony Weiner, state Sen. Eric Schneiderman, Assemblyman Jeffrey Dinowitz and SEIU President Andy Stern will join more than 200 striking workers and thousands of other union members on a march, starting at 11:30 a.m., at Fort Independence Park, Sedgwick Avenue and Guiles Place.
Workers at the 400-bed nursing home have been fighting the home's owner, Helen Siegert, for health insurance.
Meanwhile, according to the union, the state Department of Health and the New York State Attorney General’s Office are both pursuing allegations of Medicaid fraud against the nursing home.
Many neighbors have spoken out in favor of the workers’ cause and have planted signs outside of their homes to show support. The Fort Independence Park Neighborhood Association has posted daily updates on the strike on its Web site.

IT IS ABSOLUTELY OUTRAGEOUS THAT THE STATE DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH IS NOT DOING ANYTHING THEY ARE PAID TO DO.RESIDENTS IN KHRCC ARE DYING, EMPLOYEES ARE DYING AND RESIDENTS ARE RUNNING AWAY. WHAT IS GOING ON HERE?WHY DOESN'T THE STATE DEPARTMENT SEE THE DEPLORABLE CONDITIONS AND THAT FAMILIES ARE REMOVING THEIR LOVED ONES FROM THIS FACILITY.ARE THEIR STANDARDS SET SO LOW ,THAT THIS IS ACCEPTABLE? THE POWERS THAT BE HAVE GOT TO STEP IN AND DO WHAT IS NECESSARY TO END THIS STRIKE,SO EVERYONE CAN RETURN TO SOME FORM OF NORMALCY.
The rally was a great success. There were thousands of union members, community residents and political figures that attended. If you would like to see pictures check out www.fipna.org
It is unbelievable that this is day 74 of this strike and nobody is doing anything to come to some sort of agreement. When is the state going to step in?
zzzzzzzzzz
Riverdale Press, please write stories that people actually care about. Enough with the strikes that affect nobody. Enough with the stories about how the city MAY buy the Putnam Trail in 25 years. ENOUGH!
Can't wait till the new owners change the staff and put on some writers who actually know the community.
THIS IS IN RESPONSE TO ANONYMOUS #2'S COMMENT..YOU INCONSIDERATE, ARROGANT ,SELFISH UNFEELING JACKASS!!!!!!DON.T YOU REALIZE HOW MANY PEOPLES LIVES ARE AFFECTED BY THE STRIKE AT KHRCC?????? DON'T YOU REALIZE THAT A LOT OF RESIDENTS HAVE DIED DURING THIS STRIKE, AS WELL AS 2 EMPLOYEES. WHAT'S THE MATTER WITH YOU?HAVE YOU NO COMPASSION FOR YOUR FELLOW MAN? I BET IF YOU WERE ON STRIKE FOR 83 DAYS, YOU'D WANT IT PLASTERED ALL OVER THE FRONT PAGE..AND I DON'T HIDE BEHIND 'ANONYMOUS"YOU BIG CHICKEN...
To comment #3 anonymous..When you say get some reporters that know the community, are you trying to say Kingsbridge isn't part of that community? That's not a very nice thing to say!! As for new owners, we'll see, but the Steins have been wonderful owners, realizing that there are communities other than Riverdale.
The article on the rally was excellent. . . . The rally itself was the largest gathering of people in the area since we held hands around the reservoir as a show of strength against the plan to build a filter plant IN the Jerome Park Reservoir. . . . . And, no matter what the #3 comment person thinks, the Putnam Line will one day be a place for people to walk.
. . . A local paper can not only write about one area, no matter how parochial others may be -- there is a whole world out there. . . . The number of people who live in the CB 8 area of Kingsbridge Heights and Van Cortlandt Village outweighs Riverdale up on the hill. . . . .We would love to have a story about KH and VCV each week, but don't mind sharing. . . . What's up with your narrow minded comment . . . obviously you are the one who knows nothing about the community!
. . . Moreover, you have an alternative. You can chose to read other local media for your stories, but they are not as good as the award winning, excellently written Riverdale Press.
. . . Bravo to the Riverdale Press. I hear that they are staying!
I DON'T KNOW IF #3 HAS EVER BEEN UP TO ORANGE COUNTY BUT IF YOU EVER ARE,CHECK OUT OUR HERITAGE TRAIL...IT'S A FINE EXAMPLE OF WHAT THE PUTNAM TRAIL COULD BE..,.SO DON'T BE SO QUICK TO JUDGE, YOU MIGHT ACTUALLY LIKE THE END RESULT..
Very Interesting!
Thank You!
