Curtains for Clinton?

Is the Department of Education going to close DeWitt Clinton High School, too?

If you ask United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew, the answer is yes.

In response to an Independent Budget Office report that said schools slated for phase out have a disproportionate share of the City's high-need students, Mr. Mulgrew said that Clinton's days are numbered.

"Between 2005 and 2010 the special education population has increased 37 percent. The homeless population has increased 350 percent. There are 700 English language learners and over 620 students in special education," Mr. Mulgrew said of Clinton.

Read the rest of the story then tell us whether you think it's curtains for Clinton.

Of course it's curtains for Clinton. Isn't the DOE's playbook obvious by now? Closing down schools makes room for charters, it throws lots of veteran teachers into the ATR pool, it provides lots of patronage jobs in the form of the adminstrations of the smaller new schools, and it forces the worst students into the few large high schools that remain, thus starting their death spiral.

As if that's not all bad enough, the theory that smaller schools are somehow better has basically been completely debunked. The benefits of smaller schools come entirely from their ability to get rid of disruptive students.
