I heard them -- but I thought they sounded synthetic.
I heard it! What was that??
We don't know what they were. We're trying to get to the bottom of it. What tune did you hear?
What time?
I heard them in lower Yonkers and when I got to the #4 train they were really loud. I asked some of the guys coming out of the Croton Water Treatment Project in Van Cortlandt Park on the Jerome Avenue side what was going on -- they were testing the system and that was their "sound" of choice. It was Close Encounters of a Third Kind -- I was starting to think we had "visitors" :)
I heard them at about 8:05 as I walked my kids to PS 24 and back. I felt like I was in "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." I'm tone deaf so I can't help you with the tune. Sorry. I'd love to know what it was.
soooo many people heard them from jerome ave to riverdale!! its scary!
We have conducted somewhat of a mini-investigation into this creepy church-like, b-horror movie sounding music that started in the middle of the night...Visitation Church says it was not them. St Anns Chuch says it was not them, and Woodlawn Cemetery, though they say they could be responisble for causing such acoustics, their organ is currently broken. The mystery, therefore continues...
TONS of Manhattan College students heard the bells from apartments up by Riverdale Ave all the way down to East Hill dorms but no one has any idea what it was! If anyone figures out the source of the bells please be sure to pass the information on!
I heard them as well. I go to Fieldston. I thought they were coming from our middle school
it started at 6:55am-ish
I thought I was dreaming, it sounded like the chime from my Nana's Grandfather Clock.
Like a door bell ringing.
Then I realized it was coming from outside my window...and it was LOUD. The first thing I thought was "CHEMICAL SPILL".
Interesting.
for your information, the bells tolled again on March 15, 2011 @11:45am. I believe the communities surrounding the filtration plant have a right to know why the bells toll.
I heard the tones as well, and had all the same thoughts as all of you: dorbell, aliens, church bells.....I then went upstate to Latham, NY and heard them there, which really freaked me out, so I found the name of that tone sequence: Westminster Chimes-which is best known as the sound of Big Ben. That particular chime is a universal test tone for civil defense sirens. If you drive by the park on Jerome ave. you will see the speakers on poles. Why they are testing the speakers is my current question.....
that is definitely what I was searching for, You have saved me alot of time
