Ale House owner interviewed
Check out this interview with the co-owner of the Bronx Ale House, Jason Janawsky. The website picks random New Yorkers and interviews them about their jobs, their lives, etc. etc. Mr. Janawsky, who opened the Bronx Ale House on West 238th Street in 2009, said that before he opened the bar, he had never been to the Bronx except for Yankee games. He currently lives in Astoria and said has been talking about opening "a couple more" Bronx Ale Houses in the future.
Curtains for Clinton?
Is the Department of Education going to close DeWitt Clinton High School, too?
If you ask United Federation of Teachers President Michael Mulgrew, the answer is yes.
In response to an Independent Budget Office report that said schools slated for phase out have a disproportionate share of the City's high-need students, Mr. Mulgrew said that Clinton's days are numbered.
"Between 2005 and 2010 the special education population has increased 37 percent. The homeless population has increased 350 percent. There are 700 English language learners and over 620 students in special education," Mr. Mulgrew said of Clinton.

Running in vannie
The New York Times City Room blog has a story about the history of the Van Cortlandt Park Cross Country Trail.
Matt Centrowitz, who will be inducted into the Van Cortlandt Cross Country Hall of Fame on Friday, said competing in Van Cortltant was like war.
"The point was, if you were a star in any state, you came to Vannie like a gunslinger. Guys came ready for war," he said.

IBO releases report on phase outs
The Independent Budget Office recently surveyed the 25 schools that the Department of Education has proposed for phase outs.
The IBO found that the schools on the chopping block tend to have a disproportionate share of high-need and black students.
The report said 22 percent of students at John F. Kennedy are in special education and 19 percent are English language learners.
“There is evidence that the level of need of students in closing high schools has been increasing at a faster rate than the citywide average,” the report read, in part.
The Bronx has more schools on the closure list than any other borough and the IBO estimated that 6,707 Bronxite students will be affected by the phase-outs.

State of the Union stalker?
We already knew this about Rep. Eliot Engel, but Salon.com recently ranked him as one of the top five "Aisle Hogs" at State of the Union addresses.
The story includes a nice clip show of the top five shaking hands with the Commander in Chief throughout the years. See below.
We also found a clip of last night's entrance, featuring some familiar faces. To see Mr. Engel in action, jump to the 1:07 mark. According to WNYC's political reporter Azi Paybarah, Mr. Engel had already secured his seat by 9:24 a.m. He also did his part for a night, ehem, I mean day, of bipartisanship by grabbing a seat on the GOP side.

Jumping the gun on new charter schools?
The Department of Education’s “proposal” to phase out John F. Kennedy High School by 2014 and replace it with two New Visions charters beginning next school year is starting to seem like a foregone conclusion.
According to the New Visions website, the New Visions Charter High School for Humanities and the New Visions Charter High School for Advanced Math and Science are “opening September 2011 at Kennedy High School.”
Plus, New Visions for Public Schools and the Northwest Bronx Community and Clergy Coalition held a “student recruitment forum and information session” last night at St Stephen's United Methodist Church, according to an e-mail obtained by The Press.
Before the DOE can phase out Kennedy, the Panel for Educational Policy, with members appointed by borough presidents, must vote on the issue. There will be a separate vote about phasing in the new schools.
If you have an opinion about the DOE’s proposal to close Kennedy leave a comment and attend the public hearing on Friday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m. in JFK.

Phasing in the phase-out meetings
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. met with Schools Chancellor Cathie Black today to discuss, among other things, the phase out of John F. Kennedy High School.
The meeting is private but The Press will do its best to get a recap.
The Beep also had a meeting with education officials last night to discuss school closures, although his press secretary could not provide specifics.
At last night’s District 10 Community Education Council meeting, which only one parent not involved with the CEC attended, the DOE’s proposal to phase out Kennedy by 2014 was a hot topic.
The general consensus seemed to be that Kennedy is struggling, but that closing it and replacing it with two New Visions charters may not the best plan.
However, a representative from Mr. Diaz’s office, Delores Jordan, suggested that students who currently attend JFK be given six months to a year to get their grades up. Those who are successful could be invited to attend the new charters, she said.

Bronx historian reveals Riverdale to AARP members
Did you know that the bedrock of Riverdale is the oldest rock formation in New York City? That legendary singer Ella Fitzgerald was an orphan at the Colored Orphan Asylum in Riverdale, well before the institution disappeared in the 1960s? And that the first school in the area was the Riverdale Institute, a girls-only facility?
These were some of the facts that Bronx historian Lloyd Ultan shared with members of the AARP Riverdale Chapter at the Riverdale Presbyterian Church on Wednesday.
Ultan, a Bronx native who has written nine books, gave a 40-minute lecture about Riverdale’s history, from its first inhabitants to the development of the area during the 19th century.
“The presence of the Parkway make Riverdale a place to live,” Ultan said.
“This is great. It’s so interesting learning detailed facts about our community,” one member of the audience said.
AARP holds a variety of events every month. On Wednesday, Feb. 16, singer Deidre Donovan will perform, and on Wednesday, March 16, musician Don Anthony will play the banjo.
For information more about upcoming events, call Manfred Segal at 718-549-0088.

Beep smacks 'American Idol' back
Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. is not happy with last night's episode of American Idol. Before 16-year-old Bronxite Travis Orlando sang "Eleanor Rigby" by the Beatles and "I'm Yours" by Jason Mraz, the show featured a segment with some unflattering scenes and images from the Bronx, including a broken fire hydrant, police lights blaring and a dangling pay phone.
“I am thoroughly disgusted with the treatment of the Bronx on American Idol last night. Rather than focus on the amazing revitalization the Bronx has seen over the past three decades, the producers of the show chose instead to highlight the negative stereotypes that have plagued our borough for years," Mr. Diaz said in a press release.
